Wedding Customs Explained - "Something Borrowed" - By Orange County Wedding Officiants - www.legallymarried.com

March 27, 2011 - A “Community” is a group of people living in a particular local area. A “Community” participates in common interests or goals. A community shares a history as well. So, what does “Community” have to do with the wedding adage “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, and Something Blue?” This condensed, but memorable proverb, embodies some valuable fact of experience that is taken as true by many people.

Brides Utilize The Custom, But Often Don’t Know What This Wedding Proverb Means!

The wearing of a “borrowed” thing demonstrates "community" participation in, and approval or blessing of the wedding. It is preferable that the item is “borrowed” from a friend or family member with a model marriage. Some sources say “borrowing” something from a happily married person is like borrowing happiness from them – In this way, their happiness will carry over to the new bride. This is the backdrop of the corporate association – Here, the best values of the “community” are ascribed to the “borrowed” item.

There are yet, a few more suggested symbolisms ascribed to “Something Borrowed”…. For example, that the bride’s choice of “borrowed” item and person is a sentimental recognition of the love and adoration felt for the lender. Or, the “borrowed” item may signify the bride’s confident reliance on the trustworthiness of her friends and family – they will always be there to support her!

Be a Bride "Story Teller" Include Your "Something Borrowed" Story In Your Wedding Day

There is nothing like a story well told!  My father, a pioneer in the Television Industry was the best Story Teller, and he did this through the eyes of a camera. - Coupled with his amazing natural creativity, his contributions to generations brought influence and enjoyment.  We are all "Story Tellers" in some way. On your wedding day, you are a "Story Teller" too. Your wedding guests will enjoy, the "back story" of the customs that you include in your ceremony celebration. So, tell all about. It is your day to showcase what is meaningful to you and your marriage partner.  On a wedding day, a bride and groom are "telling the story" of their past, present and future together. And, in the presence of those who care the most.  Make it a real "Story Book Wedding", by taking time to select meaningful customs choices for yourselves, family and friends to enjoy.

  • Ask the Wedding Officiator to integrate the sentiment of your "Something Borrowed" choice into your marriage ceremony text. As a Southern California Wedding Officiator, I custom write each ceremony presided. My materials are original, and so are my individual adaptations of traditional and modern wedding ceremony customs.
  • Or, ask the D.J or Master of Ceremony to include your "Something Borrowed" choice into your marriage ceremony text.
  • Include a statement about the history of your "Something Borrowed" choice in your marriage program.
  • Record your "Something Blue" story,  to be played at some point during your wedding ceremony celebration - Reception or Wedding Ceremony.

The White Road to The Wedding Ceremony Altar, Gazebo, Capella... By California Wedding Officiators - Ask Dr. Linda - Celebrity Wedding Officiator

March 25, 2011 -  California -  - Bride Story Teller Series on Wedding Customs - Celebrity Wedding Officiator Article By Dr. Linda Wainwright Trott (Revised June 30 2013)

The Meaning of The White Aisle Runner -  On one hand, it is said that “Customs form us all - Our thoughts,  feelings, morals, and other most fixed beliefs……” On the other hand, a person holding an alternative idea of "Customs", would view this suggested definition as somewhat backwards. In actual fact,  perhaps customs are really "the outward expressions of our thoughts, morals, feelings, and other most fixed beliefs." In any event, weddings are replete with the honouring of “Custom”. Whether symbolic and/or practical in observance, “Custom” finds a happy home from generation to generation.

A Wedding Custom – Meaning Of The White Aisle Runner
  • One custom suggests that the “White Aisle Runner” is a visual symbolism of the bride’s life from birth to that moment of marriage.
  • In yet another tradition, the “White Aisle Runner“, has as its symbolism, that of walking on holy ground - Because marriage is a covenant made not merely between two people and their witnesses. - It is given in the presence of God and He is actively involved in the agreement. The “White Aisle Runner”, then, is the optical statement of the sacredness of marriage, and God’s participation in the solemnization of the marriage ceremony.
  • I have thought about it too, adding my own meaning...., the "White Aisle Runner" represents the virtues of Marriage. Like faithfulness, commitment, love, respect, etc.
  • I have thought about it too, adding my own meaning......, the "White Aisle Runner" signifies the "clean slate" which starts with this most esteemed relationship of marriage. The relationship begins anew with exclusivity.
  • There are other original explanations of the "White Aisle Runner" used in our custom written marriage ceremonies, here at The Clergy Network of Southern California.

Orange County & Los Angeles County Wedding Officiants - Super Prepared, Has A 62 Page Pre-Ceremony & Wedding Ceremony Day Checklist!

March 17, 2011 - Dale Carnagie said, "Only the prepared speaker deserves to be confident."  How much more true is this when a Wedding Officiant. If you think this is not true, as a Wedding Officiant make a mistake during the presiding of the wedding ceremony!  There will be some "explaining to do!" Moreover, at any point, during the wedding ceremony planning, the smallest detail left untidy can send many a bride reeling! How much more so, on the wedding day! Yet, with the "fake" Wedding Officiant trend, few understand the importance of preparing for the profession. It is almost as if wedding professionals and marrying couples think that all one has to do is "just stand up there and talk!" This is an unfortunate myth, and a dangerous one at that! It implies lack of understanding as to what goes into being a bona fide Wedding Officiant!

At The Clergy Network - Orange County & Los Angeles Wedding Officiants - our pre-ceremony & ceremony day checklist is about 62 pages - We know Dale Carnagie would be proud!

Terry's True Wedding Ceremony Story - Why She Didn't Ask A Family Member To Preside Her Marriage Ceremony?

March 15th 2011 - When Terry was about to be married, she had the option of a number of degreed and trained wedding officiants from which to select. These career wedding celebrants were respected and legitimate leaders in her faith community. In making their officiant decision, Terry and fiance, shared a concern, which was not one of their training or acumen – In short, the candidates were all Terry's  family members with shared history and biology! Popular opinion suggests that a close relationship with the wedding officiant makes for a flawless, interesting and meaningful ceremony. This is a misnomer, in that it is actually the close psychological bond that works against a successful nuptial experience. In Terry’s case, all family members were great public speakers with years of experience under their belts, but none-the-less family!

The marriage ceremony is filled with intensely high expectations, and a myriad of deeply ruminating emotions. In addressing the trend – that of a family member’s presiding of a relative’s marriage ceremony - this DIY catastrophe is causing heartaches for couples, families and ceremony related wedding professionals! On-line “ordination” or County Clerk “deputization for the day” is for the sole purpose of performing a single wedding ceremony, and is popular in some states.

What Were Terry's & Fiance's Concerns About A Family Member Wedding Officiant?

Terry and fiance knew that the familial emotions ran deep, this, coupled with lofty expectations, was a blend to disaster. On the wedding day, all eyes will be on them, AND their family member officiant!  Despite skill and experience, their confident family member may find the attention unhelpful – they are reading more than a script! Will they choke up! Will they be able to continue, after losing composure? Will they make mistakes, because of their personal need to “give the best wedding ceremony performance ever?” Will it become over - personal, so as to lose other important ceremony qualities? Will Terry and fiance, "feel married",  if a family member presides? If there is are "nervous mistakes" by the family member, can Terry, husband and family member get past them in the future?

In the meantime, know that Terry and her fiance selected a trained wedding officiant, one with a great personality and heart. This, in conjunction with the potential officiant's willingness to put in the time to formalize a custom written ceremony, was the winning combination. But, best of all, the officiant was not a family member! On the wedding day, all family members loved the ceremony, and as one expressed, “I was able to enjoy the ceremony as a family member, and not as my niece’s officiant! I let the tears and emotions flow, without concern of messing up my niece’s big day!”

If your wedding ceremony is important, discover the services of a degreed, trained and background checked wedding officiant – One whose daily life's work is about “all things ceremony!”

Bride Tanya's Wedding Ceremony Dilema - Boutique or Brand Name Southern California Wedding Location - By The Clergy Network Wedding Officiants

March 10th 2011 – As Wedding Officiants, we know about something about Wedding Locations! - This story from Wedding Ceremony Insider:

Tanya’s First Wedding Location Dilemma – Not Aesthetics, But Wedding Location Topography!

Tanya, a Bride Asks Dr. Linda -

"Should We  Select  a Private (Boutique) Wedding Venue or Larger Brand Name Wedding Location?"

We can't decide for Tanya, but we can give suggestions on the "Pros" and "Cons" innate to different types of wedding venues - after all no one location is without weakness.

In any event, Tanya's number of wedding guests could easily fit into a smaller or larger wedding venue – However, Tanya is not really convinced as to where to hold her wedding. The only thing for certain is that she wants the marriage ceremony and reception in the same place – Keeping the event at a single location has definitive advantages for all attending.

In a "brand named" Southern California wedding venue, such as a hotel or country club, there may be more name recognition, and an association with quality or excellence. However, there are some appealing qualities to a more private or "boutique" event venue. Tanya's budget could be honoured with either wedding topographical selection – Private does not necessarily mean “more expensive”!

Some Advantages of A Private Wedding Location In Southern California

As Southern California Wedding Officiants, we have certainly seen the following:

In a larger, and more populated “name brand” wedding location, there may be more than one wedding ceremony, or wedding and reception occurring at the same time. This can lead to confusion and a diminishing of the specialness of a couple's wedding day. In Tanya’s thinking, a private wedding ceremony location would help to avoid her competing with 4 or 5 other brides on the way to their own wedding ceremonies. This is not an uncommon scenario in larger hotels, a lobby bustling with brides, grooms, and a hoard of wedding guests!

Tanya, was also concerned about tussling with other brides and grooms for the best picture taking locations in or around a hotel or country club venue. With multiple weddings taking place on any given Saturday, this was not a crazy possibility. And, of course, the larger “name brand” locations innately pose a problem to wedding guests; after all, Tanya had been a wedding guest herself - She remembered scouting out what she thought was her friend’s wedding gift table, only to find out that she was at the wrong wedding. Wedding gifts placed incorrectly at the wrong couple's gift station happens at “name brand” wedding locations every wedding weekend!

Finally, at a private, more "boutique" wedding venue, there can be a “Spirit De Corp” amongst the locations “Preferred” wedding professionals who frequent the same. Again, not always the case, but certainly a possiblity. These vendors, often hand-picked by the location ownership or on-site wedding coordinator, etc., probably work together on a regular basis and know the wedding property well. These wedding professionals work together with a happy and cooperative team spirit, and this is a benefit for any marrying couple. In short, these wedding professionals could operate more like a “well oiled machine”, and this was appealing to Tanya!

Who Is The Clergy Network Wedding Officiants of Southern California? What is Your Experience With "Boutique" Wedding Locations

Private wedding locations provide a comfortable environment for the bride, groom and family. Dressing room space for the wedding party, remains theirs the whole day - no being bumped from rooms because it is scheduled for the next wedding of the day. As a wedding officiant, it is nice to have members of the wedding party and family in predictable places - this means it is easier to ask them questions and to assist in the pre-ceremony organization.  Moreover, the wedding vendors are more settled, as their work areas are also predictable, and are not being shared with vendors related to the next event. The privacy and single event use facilitated by a "boutique" or "private" venue has charming and significant advantages.

Bridal Show - Brides at Recent Show Admit To Picking Their Wedding Officiant Without Knowledge On The Subject - By Wedding Officiants & Wedding Ceremony Insiders

March 7th 2011 - Terry was usually a discriminating Southern California bride, but picked her Wedding Officiant without effort.  She thought, without much of a search,  "He is available, great, let's book him!" Her story is especially troublesome, in that it is a true one - Joining the ranks of many wedding ceremony nightmare stories which  come to the notice of The Clergy Network of Southern California  - (Wedding Officiators) - by virtue of a person or persons attending some wedding ceremony tragedy. Hearing that we are consummate professionals, TCN is often asked for help, by brides likeTerry, who don't know where to report a Wedding Clergy or Officiator problem in California.

Southern California Bridal Show Trends Results For Selecting A Wedding Officiant

At a recent bridal show, it was again affirmed that many couples not only pick their Wedding Officiants with reluctance, but they do so in complete ignorance! It seems tragic that something so important as the wedding ceremony is treated so casually. After all, the Wedding Clergy or Marriage Officiator has much control during the ceremony presiding. Once the wedding ceremony begins, they can say or do what they want, within reason. They can espouse their political, religious or other views. They can cut the ceremony short, make it longer, crack distasteful jokes, insult the cherished ideas of others, or any number of unsatisfactory things. Their words and actions will be in the minds of the wedding guests, the marrying couple's families, and the bride and groom for a potential life time. Shouldn't the memories be pleasant, bringing back fond memories? There is only the one chance to "get it right". So, why so laid back, or trusting or uninformed about Wedding Officiants?

At the bridal shows, brides seemed to be more concerned about price than the service being contracted. Perhaps its the economy or something more permanent - a shifting in the culture, which devalues the role of Wedding Officiator. Like when selecting other wedding professionals, should not research be incorporated into the decision making process? What about professional references? Will the prospective Wedding Officiant provide a "real" contract with  specific services outlined? Will the Wedding Officiant guarantee emergency backup in the event of their illness? Will the contracted Wedding Officiator be the one that shows up on the wedding day? Will the Wedding Officiant even show up on the wedding day? As to their personal appearance, will the Wedding Officiant wear what the couple requests? Will they provide and then stick to the ceremony wording selected by the bride and groom? Will they file the marriage license properly? There are so many things to know about selecting a Wedding Officiant!

With the rise of Wedding Officiant "fakes", it is even more of a problem than before! Concerned only about money or promoting their personal views or stroking their ego, illegitimate Wedding Officiants are duping brides and grooms in the Southern California area. Some might say, "Well the couple gets what they deserve. After all they should have done their research!". Whatever your opinion, it is our mission, as genuine Wedding Officiants, to say a few words about the subject. Our hope is that there will be less "Terrys" out there, and more couples with great wedding ceremony memories!

What Happened To Terry The Bride During Her Marriage Ceremony?

A number of things, but one of the most troubling was her having to correct the Wedding Officiant more than once during the wedding ceremony! From the beginning, when the Wedding Officiant asked, "Who gives this woman to be married to this man?", Terry had to give commentary. Her response to the Wedding Officiants questions, "Mom, I didn't tell him to say that!". It got worse from there. Choose your Wedding Officiant wisely!

Maison Des Oliviers - www.legallymarried.com - Orange County Wedding Location & Wedding Officiants

Why A Private Orange County Wedding Location Over A Larger Hotel Or Wedding Venue?

More specially,  in larger venues, such as hotels, some country clubs and the like, more than one wedding takes place at the same time. This leads to confusion and a diminishing of the specialness of a couple's wedding day. At a private wedding ceremony location, there is no running into 5 or 6 other brides walking through a hotel lobby, all on the way to their own ceremonies. No concern over standing in line with other couples to take wedding pictures at the best area locations. No lost wedding guests, wondering if they are at the right wedding ceremony? Wedding gifts placed at the wrong couple's gift station! For one very smart and lucky bride and groom , simply a day, just their own. The Maison des Oliviers, in San Juan Capistrano, is such a lovely idea. As a private owner occupied estate home, once booked, the location is yours for the day! Lorrie de Bellis, Wedding Event Coordinator ,  lorrie.debellis@gmail.com , is the person to contact for a private walk through Maison des Oliviers. It’s Not Your Mother’s Marriage Ceremony ….. Or Is It? By Dr. Linda Of www.legallymarried.com

March 5th 2011 - Traditional & Usual Wasn’t Their Style – But, Rather Sentimental & Participatory & Engaging! A Younger Wedding Ceremony Mindset for A New Century!

Clara And John - As a Bride and Groom, A Pleasant Surprise !

After a complete survey, during the ceremony planning session with Dr. Linda, this 50 something wedding couple “saw the technological light”. This is why!

Clara and John are a happy age-matured couple, and at the threshold of a second marriage. Their minds were clear with the assertion that this marriage ceremony would be all the previous ones had not been. Their former marriage ceremonies were as dull and lifeless and insignificant as the marriages they left behind. But, this wedding ceremony was going to be a “microcosm” of their definitive commitment to a marriage which would end only with the death of one or both! Although living most of their adult life in the 20th century, they were searching for meaningful wording, ideas and unique participation. This couple chose to use new technology in their nuptial ceremony, on the suggestion of The Clergy Network Wedding Officiants of Southern California. A brain child of Dr. Linda Wainwright Trott, TCN’s newest ceremony think tank is providing captivating ideas for 21st century life celebrations!

The American Wedding Ceremony Not Being Redefined by The 21st Century Bride? Or is it?

How Does The Younger Generation See The Marriage Ceremony?

The American bride might or might not be ready to alter the essential core of the wedding ceremony. In short, trending away from the expected marriage ceremony wording and inclusions to something more this century remains to be seen. After all, what is this century all about, for it is merely a newborn in the sands of human time?

As Wedding Ceremony Writers & Presiders, The Clergy Network Wedding Officiants of Southern California seem some what alone in the new style scripting of the “I Do” celebrations for this generation. This kind of scripting takes acumen, and few possess this. It takes marrying couples wanting to think differently.  Yet, on the technological front, yes, brides and grooms are using new technology to plan or research, but the corporate mind of twenty – somethings is not yet geared to thinking differently about the nuptial ceremony. The perception is that the wedding ceremony is a necessary evil to please family and friends, something that has an unchangeable format, or is the way it is because the “law” says so.

It just takes time for a new culture to define itself – perhaps the couples of this current generation are to close to the 2oth century to recalibrate. Maybe, they just need to know that there are alternatives. Or, we just need to excite them a bit more to expression. And, yet, what is true about the marriage ceremony, as we westerners have know it, is that it has its timeless elements – These things do not essentially change. Nor, should they? Committed Love, lasting marriage, a healthy family life and the pursuit of a true happiness that overflows to the benefit of others, need always be fashionable and trendy and present – These are some of the absolutes that stand alone in each generation!

What About Clara and John? How Did Their 21st Century Style Wedding Ceremony Turn Out!

This more 21st century minded couple, sought participation from the represented generations on their wedding day. From the custom written ceremony wording to the partnership of family members during the ceremony, it was simply charming. But, the prerecorded dialogue between the bride and groom, complete with background music, this was a 21st century super star! http://www.legallymarried.com/  was the perfect match for this future reaching couple; perhaps we have started a few new trends, just for this century’s brides and grooms. We will write more about “21st Wedding Trends”, of which we hope to be the “Trend Setters”!

The Problem These Days With Wedding Officiants In Southern California - Complaints Department

The Clergy Network is receiving calls from unhappy brides and grooms who had selected a wedding officiant from the Internet or other referral means. Learning about our integrity and credibility, they are contacting us. Perhaps, we can direct them to their desired recourse. Here are some of there complaints about wedding officiants, not with our group.

1. Sara, "Where do I report my officiant, they did not let my 3 sisters read during the ceremony, and then got our names wrong. They promised me that they would do as we asked".

Answer - There is no state regulatory group in which to report this kind of offense. The state makes no recommendations on wedding officiants as to credibility, integrity or reliability. Unless otherwise specifically guaranteed in a contract, there is most likely no recourse. Choose your wedding officiant wisely!

2. Maria, "I am on my second marriage license, this last one is about to expire this week! I am still not married. My Long Beach wedding officiant gave me the wrong information about marriage license jurisdiction, even though I told him that I was getting married in Rancho Cucamonga. On the day of my wedding, he could not legally marry us! He said that he would meet us and marry us at a later time, but to go and get another license. We did, but he hasn't had time to meet us, and now this license is about to expire!"

Answer - So many are purchasing their titles from on-line! Picking one like this is a big mistake! Anyway, there is no real recourse. The best thing that this couple could do is to get married before the second license ran out. The Clergy Network helped with this, and the couple is now legally married! Choose your marriage officiant wisely!

3. Wedding Coordinator- "Help the wedding officiant is not showing up for the wedding ceremony, can you send someone now?"

Answer - Yes, we did, and have done so on many occasions. Fake wedding officiants are plenteous in Southern California, and the Clergy Network's emergency clergy back up system has been a great help to wedding venues for this reason. In fact, one location called us 5 times in one year! It is best to obtain a wedding officiant who has a backup guarantee in their contract. To date, The Clergy Network is the only group to be found locally which does the same.  Choose your marriage minister wisely!
