Southern California - What Makes A Person A Legitimate Wedding Officiant, Wedding Minister or Wedding Clergy? - www.legallymarried.com

February 9, 2011 – A Bride asks her Orange County California Event Coordinator - “…We have a lay officiant conducting our ceremony, he is from San Diego county and he wanted to make sure that he would be able to perform the ceremony in Orange county. Do you know if he needs to have a license from orange county in order to perform the ceremony?...”

PROBLEM - INTERNET ORDINATION - Calfornia State Has Some Control Over Legitimacy, But Not Over Competency Or Quality Of Service!

How does a bride and groom know that their Wedding Officiant or Wedding Minister or Civil Ceremony Officiant is legally able to preside (solemnize) a marriage ceremony in California state or in a county of  that state's jurisdiction? Good questions…let us answer the question generally first.

The State of California posts the following as a legitimate Wedding Officiant, Wedding Minister or Wedding Clergy. Please note that “authority” to preside a wedding ceremony does not speak to the issue of competency! Any group can form a “religious non-profit”, and “ordain for profit”, thus so many tragic wedding stories of couples weddings ruined by officiators who only purchased the “authority” to marry via the Internet. This is an illegitimate way to become an officiator, without education or training in public speech presentation, marriage law, ceremony writing, social psychology, etc., there is no competency -  the obligation is not taken seriously! “Pocket change” wedding officiants are phenomena in this current economy. The state of California’s CDC posts the following:
"4. What authorization do I need to perform a marriage in California?

• In California, it is the ordination or investment by the denomination that gives each clergy member the authority to perform the marriage rite. Family Code, Sections 400-402 are the statutes pertaining to who can solemnize a marriage in California.

5. What statutes do I need to know to perform a marriage in California?

• The marriage officiant who performs the marriage ceremony must know the California laws regarding the performance of a marriage and the requirements for officiants. Family Code, Sections 420-425 are the statutes pertaining to the performance of a marriage in California. Please visit http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/  for the full Family Code sections.

Who Do I Contact To Ascertain My Proposed Wedding Officiant's Legitimacy?

The State of California will not confirm the legitimacy of any Wedding Officiant, Wedding Minister or Wedding Clergy! To find out if your Wedding Officiant, Wedding Minister or Wedding Clergy is ordained or invested by their denomination, ask for paperwork or information on whom to contact for verification of the same. If from an Internet Only Ordination Group (posing as non-profit, but acting for profit only) , know that there is no education, training or background check of the applicant required, and that the "ordination fee" is what grants a person the "right to preside" a marriage ceremony.  After this illegitimate ordination or investement via the Internet, no matter how bad a job they do or unethical they are, these Wedding Officiants only have to pay their yearly fee to remain "ordained"! After all, for these fake denominations and religions, it is all about the profit margin ! Also, if the Wedding Officiant holds legitimate earned titles, such as “Doctor”, they may or may not be ordained or invested. Likewise, the title "Doctor", "Reverend", "Clergy" may also be purchased for a fee on-line!
